On Thin Ice: Special Guest Author Maer Wilson

By - May 8, 2013

Hello again, Blog Club!  Today, I'm pleased as punch (Side note: remind me to do a Picking Fights with Phrases blog on this in the future) to have with us in the hot seat a talented friend of mine of the author persuasion.  *drum roll*  Take a bow, Maer Wilson!  Maer is stopping over today to chat about her new urban fantasy, RELICS, as well as a little of this and that, with a side of,"if my house burned down."  And stay tuned at the end- we'll tell you about a chance to win a special giveaway from our guest!

So, it takes a LONG time to write a book.  So long that few people ever finish one, let alone a series. When did you start writing?

First I wanted to say thank you, Colby, for letting me stop by today. In a way I’ve been writing since I was child between character creations, bad poetry and such. In 2000, I wrote a bad play which I turned into a better screenplay in 2005. I began work on Relics almost three years ago.

How long does it typically take you to finish your manuscript?

My first draft is very fast, usually under two months. Then I go to my wonderful, finicky beta readers for several rounds of revisions. That can take from six months to a year as I tweak away.

What’s something readers would be surprised to know about you after they read one of your books?

They might be surprised to find out that I play MMOs and have for about eight years now. I’ve played or tried most of the big games, but I currently play Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2 and I’m eagerly awaiting Wildstar. I write for two gaming fansites.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read and why?

I can’t even begin to narrow it to one. I would say that my favorite two series are George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and the JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

If your house caught fire, what are the four things (rather than people) you’d save? (Because everyone asks “three,” and I think you should get four!)

I wish I’d known it was four when mine burned down years ago. When I realized my house was on fire, I put the dog out into the fenced yard and grabbed the music I’d been composing. That’s it. It was a friend who was with me who actually picked up my purse and dayplanner. Once the fire department got there, I begged them to grab my computer, which they did. So I guess you could say I chose three things.

What is your favorite time of day to write/why?

That entirely depends on my mood. I can write just about any time and it seems I’m always writing something. It might not be my novel though. I don’t think I really have a favorite time.

What is your favorite word?

Eclectic.

What is your least favorite word?

Thief.

Tell me about your book.

Relics is the first book in the series, "The Thulukan Chronicles" and follows detectives Thulu and La Fi as they navigate an Earth forever changed by the return of myth and magic. Relics released May 1, 2013 by Crescent Moon Press.

Most of Thulu and La Fi's clients are dead. Which is perfect since their detective agency caters only to supernatural clients. La Fi is a medium and Thulu is a finder. So, finding lost relics for an ancient daemon should be simple. Except Thulu and La Fi aren't the only ones looking for the relics. Beings far older and far more powerful than humans are on the hunt as well. But Thulu and La Fi have help from grateful dead and newly-arrived magical beings. It might even be enough to find the relics first.

After a successful career being other people, and later teaching others the many tricks of that trade, Maer Wilson has decided to be herself for a while. Turns out she's a writer. She's always loved stories, especially fantasy, mystery and sci fi. Maer was born in the Year of the Dragon and has a dragon-themed room in her home, but sadly no dragons in the back yard. When she's not writing, Maer plays online video games, teaches college and reads. She also co-hosts the literary podcast, “MythBehaving” and writes for two gaming fansites. She lives in the high desert of Southern Nevada with her two dogs, a chihuahua and a poodle. Relics is her first novel and is now available from Crescent Moon Press.
