TRADE THE DAY Featured Author: G.J. Berger
By - July 30, 2013
On August 23, starting at midnight, I will be hosting a special event called Trade the Day: Spotlight on Team Alaina. During this twenty-four hour blog-a-thon, proceeds from sales of my new book, The Trade, made on my publisher's website at stairwaypress.com will go to benefit Team Alaina for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. I began featuring participating authors yesterday, and for the next 18 weekdays leading up to the big event, I will be featuring two of the day's scheduled special guests, some which will be guest blogging, some who will be hosting giveaways of autographed books and other goodies, and some who will be doing both! Get to know this fantastic group of people right here, and come back on August 23 to join us for a day of 24 hours, 23 guest authors, and 1 goal...a cure.
Now, on to today's first featured author:
G.J. BERGER
ABOUT G.J.
When G. J. was eight, his mom told him the story of Hannibal crossing the Alps with elephants and a great army. He asked her what happened to Hannibal after that. Mom didn’t know, but he was hooked, had to find out, had to write about it.
G. J. spent much of his young life on the road and at sea. often working as a crew member on a tramp steamer. Wherever his travels took him, old walls, canals, even storage holes deep in the ground, made him wonder about how they got there, about the people who built them, how they lived and got along.
The result is this and two other novels-to-be wherein the places, the history, even some of the “Burnt Rocks” characters do and did exist.
When not writing, G. J. tries to roam around the places he writes about, likes to sit and soak up the times back then and bring them to modern life in his stories. G. J. is convinced that for all the changes in last 2000 years, people loved and hated, suffered and rejoiced, destroyed and built the same ways then as they do today.
G. J. lives in San Diego with his favorite grammarian and English Professor. They visit their two sons and grandson as often as the kids will have them.
WHY G.J. IS EXCITED TO BE A PART OF TRADE THE DAY - IN HIS OWN WORDS:
"Colby's wonderful bog-a-thon touched a nerve the moment I heard about it. The sister of my darling wife (and favorite grammarian) left us far too young of a kind of blood cancer, now often curable. So, we know first-hand funding for research to find cures works! My wonderful mom was besieged by two different cancers, one of which ended her life too soon. I'm delighted and honored that Colby asked me to help in some small way."
ABOUT SOUTH OF BURNT ROCKS WEST OF THE MOON:
After three great wars, Rome has crushed Carthage. Now the undefended riches of Iberia beckon–gold, tin, olives, wine, and healthy young bodies to enslave. “Burnt Rocks”, a mostly true historical novel portrays Celtic fighting women making a last stand against the Roman army. Armed with little more than the spirits of the earth and sky, they show a courage known only to those with nothing left to lose. Based on real characters, places, and events, “Burnt Rocks” recreates that shadowy history–and eternal human nature rubbed raw.
Historical Note: The people of that time called their largest mountain range “Burnt Rocks”. We know them today as the Pyrenees separating Spain from France. The panels on this web site show those mountains at a place where some of the action of the story might have unfolded.
South Of Burnt Rocks is the winner of the 2013 San Diego Book Awards for Historical Fiction.
